Continued Jewish Settlements in the West Bank

Make no mistake, (or turn a blind eye like the Bush Administration), Israel has not frozen its West Bank settlement expansion plans. At the time of the Gaza “evacuation” in 2005, many believed that settlers would simply move into the West Bank and, in effect, that would be no solution at all, but in fact intensify Israel’s occupation there. (Of course, I’m not implying that Israel has “withdrawn” from Gaza. The authorities still maintain border control routinely denying entrance to those seeking to enter the territory leading many to call Gaza an “open air prison.”)

Now comes word just after Christmas that this feared settlement expectation is being realized. In the Maskiot area of the northern West Bank, plans are underway to build additional housing for Jewish settlers. Two Jewish families, formally of Gaza, have already moved in. Now, Israel announced it has authorized the construction of 30 new homes for Jewish settlers who were evacuated from Gaza.
