An Israeli sniper shot dead a Palestinian youth on Thursday morning in the West Bank city of Nablus amid beefed-up operations by Israeli forces there, witnesses and medics said.

Palestinian witnesses said Israeli snipers who took up positions on roofs shot two bullets at the chest of Mohammed Humidan, 25, and killed him immediately, while he was looking from the window as Israeli forces rolled into al-Ein refugee camp in western Nablus.

Local hospital sources said Mohammed arrived dead to the medical center.

Mohammed is a brother of a militant belonging to Fatah’s military wing. He himself was also a member of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

Meanwhile, Israeli media reported that the army arrested 19 Palestinians in the West Bank in an overnight raid, adding the detainees were wanted for involving in acts against the Jewish state.

During the operation, the soldiers came under Palestinian fire, but the reports denied there were any casualties.

In related developments, the Israeli sources disclosed that the General Security Service thwarted a planned suicide attack targeting Israelis in Jerusalem.

According to the report, the army arrested the would-be suicide bomber on a checkpoint near Jerusalem and found explosive devices round his waist.

In the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian militant groups fired several home-made rockets into southern Israeli town of Sderot. The armed wings of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad (Holy War) movements claimed responsibility.

A similar barrage on Wednesday killed an Israeli woman in Sderot, an Israeli fatality for first time in more than 8 months.

Israeli F16 warplanes and helicopter gunships Wednesday night bombed five houses in the Gaza Strip, wounding five.
